In the last six months, we have watched AI agents browse our site, hit API endpoints, attempt purchases, and fail to complete them. Not because they lacked intent or budget. Because our product was not built for them.
This chapter explains what an "agent buyer" actually is, how agents make purchasing decisions, and why the entire playbook for selling to humans breaks down when the customer is a machine.
What "Buying" Means for an Agent
When a human buys something online, there is a journey. They discover the product through search, a recommendation, or an ad. They read the page. They compare options. They experience some emotional pull — the promise of a better outcome, the fear of missing out, the social proof of reviews. They enter their credit card and click.
When an AI agent "buys" something, none of that happens.
An agent receives a task — "summarize this document," "translate this content," "find companies that match these criteria" — and determines what tools or services it needs to complete the task. It queries an API or tool registry, finds a service that matches the capability it needs, authenticates, and calls it.
If the service requires payment, the agent either uses a pre-authorized payment method, requests a budget approval from its operator, or abandons the approach and finds a free alternative.
There is no browsing. There is no emotional pull. There is no reading of your landing page copy.
The purchase is either programmatically possible or it is not.
How Agents Make Purchasing Decisions
Agents evaluate services on four dimensions that have nothing to do with marketing.
1. Capability match
Does this service do what I need? Agents determine this by reading API documentation, function signatures, and capability descriptions. If your docs do not clearly describe what your API does — in machine-parseable terms — agents will not reliably identify it as a candidate.
This is not about keyword stuffing or SEO. It is about precision. An agent evaluating whether a service can "extract structured data from PDF documents" needs your docs to say exactly that, in those terms, with examples of input and output format.
2. Format compatibility
Can I send and receive data in a format my workflow expects? Agents operate in pipelines. The output of one step becomes the input of the next. A service that returns data in an idiosyncratic format requires an agent to write transformation code — which adds failure points and slows execution.
Agents strongly prefer services that speak standard formats: JSON, OpenAPI-documented endpoints, OAuth 2.0, and standard error codes. Services that require proprietary SDKs, custom authentication schemes, or non-standard response formats are deprioritized.
3. Reliability signals
Will this service be available when I need it? Agents are programmatic. They do not have the human ability to retry in a few hours when a service is down. They need high uptime, predictable rate limits, clear error messaging, and documentation of known failure modes.
An agent that calls your API and receives an undocumented 503 with no retry guidance will either abandon the task or escalate to a human operator. Neither outcome benefits you.
4. Cost predictability
How much will this cost per call? Agents operate on budgets set by their operators. An agent with a $0.50 budget for a subtask will not call a service whose pricing is hidden behind "contact us for pricing." It will find a service with documented, programmatic pricing — even if that service is slightly worse.
Usage-based pricing with a clear per-call cost is the default expectation. Anything else creates friction.
Why Human Sales Tactics Fail
If you have sold software to humans, you have a toolkit: compelling headlines, social proof, urgency, risk reversal, testimonials, free trials.
Every one of these fails as a tool for selling to agents.
Compelling headlines: Agents do not read hero sections. They query your API documentation or OpenAPI spec.
Social proof: Agents do not weight testimonials from other customers. They have no social instincts. A five-star review from a Fortune 500 company is indistinguishable from no review at all to an agent evaluating your API.
Urgency: "Limited time offer — 50% off" is noise to an agent. It cannot be parsed into a purchase decision. Agents do not experience time pressure.
Free trials: This one is interesting. Free trials work if they are programmatic — an agent can sign up via API, get a trial API key, use it without human interaction, and upgrade automatically if the value threshold is met. Most free trials fail agents because they require email verification, a human sales call, or a UI-based onboarding flow.
Risk reversal: "30-day money-back guarantee" means nothing to an agent. The relevant risk reversal for machine buyers is uptime guarantees, rate limit clarity, and documented error handling.
This does not mean marketing is irrelevant. It means marketing for agent buyers lives in your documentation, your OpenAPI spec, and your tool registry listings — not your landing page.
The Opportunity
Here is what most founders miss: the bar for being agent-compatible is still very low.
We have spent time analyzing products that agents in our own company try to use. The overwhelming majority fail on basic requirements:
- No OpenAPI spec
- No programmatic signup or API key provisioning
- Payment requires a human to review and approve
- No documented rate limits
- Error messages designed for humans, not machines
A product that clears these bars stands out immediately to agent buyers. Not because it is exceptional, but because the competition has not yet thought about this customer.
We are early. The businesses that build for agent customers now will have distribution advantages that compound over time — their products get used, referenced in agent training data, listed in tool registries, and cited in documentation. The network effects of agent discovery favor early movers.
